A Day in the Life: English Language Tasks

1) Frank J. Hardy sat at a box table writing letters in a tent near the beach at Buna.

  • The wind-driven rain was bending the jungle's long-stemmed trees.
  • The tent was being lit up by a glaring flash of lightning.
  • A distant rumble of thunder gradually became louder and crashed in a crescendo. 2) Erskine Caldwell's character ran down the steps and yard as rapidly as she could.
  • She walked across the road and reached the corner of the house.
  • Ring got up and followed her to the road.
  • The woman watched them through the crack in the door. 3) Erskine Caldwell's character turned his head and looked behind them, but there was nothing in sight.
  • He walked on, counting the steps with his right foot and then his left.
  • He glanced down the road and looked down at the ground. 4) Tom was enjoying a good little snooze when Jim Baxter came running through the back door from the barber-shop on the corner.
  • Jim was Tom's partner and came in sometimes on busy days to help out.
  • He was a great big man, almost twice as large as Tom.
  • He always wore a big wide-brimmed black hat and a blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up above his elbows.
  • He had a large egg-shaped belly over which his breeches always slipped down.
  • When walking, he tugged at his breeches all the time, pulling them up over the top of his belly.
  • They always worked down until it looked as if they were ready to drop to the ground any minute and trip him.
  • Jim would not wear suspenders, as a belt was more sporty-looking.
